Thieves and Thugs: NDSL Fraud, Intimidation and Abuse Charged in Complaint Filed against Southwest Baptist University

In reinstating the complaint against Southwest Baptist University and the Missouri Baptist Convention (see here), Marie has been instructed to initiate a complaint with the National Direct Student Loan (NDSL) authorities concerning the charges of fraud, intimidation, and abuse.

After carefully considering the recommendation through prayer and consultation with others in her church, Marie initiated the initial interview with the NDSL authorities and received the paperwork – today.

Marie must clear the NDSL loan in order to enroll in her new university for the summer semester and receive health insurance benefits and treatment through the medical clinic, which specifically treats occupational and industrial chemical injuries – including organophosphate and solvent poisoning.

As one elder of Marie’s church said:

Christianity does not give license to steal without consequences and it is obscene that a Christian institution should think that such blasphemous conduct – to steal in the name of Christ -- represents righteous living.

Dear Rev. Billy and Regina Russell :

I apologize for the delay in arranging the Reconciliation Forum, as
I had discussed in my two letters (dated March 6, 2009 - here - and
March 11, 2009 - here)

As a differently-abled person, I must rely on others to assist me in a
range of tasks that most people take for granted. In relying on this help,
I must abide by the schedules and limitations of my assistants.

Such was the case last week.

This week, however, I would like to proceed with the coordination of an
electronic Reconciliation Forum, whereby we may address a variety of
issues, particularly related to my letter to First Baptist Church of Bolivar,
Missouri dated November 11, 2007.

[Early next week], I request that you (one or both) retrieve a packet
of materials related to the coordination of the Forum.

[... Instructions given as to location and time to pick up the packet.]

The packet [... will] be clearly marked with your names ... .

There is no need to knock on the door, or to speak to anyone.

However, so that I may have confirmation that you have received the
materials, please sign and leave the enclosed receipt ... .

You have my written permission to be on the premises for this purpose,
though I regret that no one will welcome you.

There will be no dangers from dogs on the grounds.

Both of my dogs were killed as a result of one of the more than a dozen nighttime/early morning pesticide attacks and the consequent illnesses,
including seizures, convulsions, frothing and bleeding lungs.

(For years, these attacks occurred -- like clockwork -- within one or two
days of EVERY occasion that I requested food, utility, energy assistance.)

[For those who asked, THIS is why, since this statement (here) in 1996,
Marie has received no local, state, or federal funds or assistance.

To this day, Marie has received no assistance from a church/
church-related organization, though she asked over a hundred
churches or parachurch organizations for help.]


There are no cats or kittens playing on the porch, who will leap
from their perches to brush against your leg, either.

My outdoor cats were killed by the pesticide attacks – the youngest,
still ill from a previous midnight assault, was apparently stolen out
of the yard, repeatedly run over, mutilated, and thrown over the fence,
for good measure.


I am sorry that you will hear no voice to welcome you.

Even the ducks, who would have quacked an excited, friendly greeting
to you have been silenced: One morning, someone trapped the flock
between the shed and the fence and systematically broke the necks
of more than a dozen of them, heaping them into a neat pile.

And no spring-budding flowers will wave salutations to you, for they
have been constantly trampled and poisoned.

Instead, please accept the greetings of humble voices: the soft song
of the spring birds and the chatter of the squirrels, who are nesting in
the sunlight-reaching trees.

Again, I apologize that I must divert your attention to such a trivial task
as retrieving packages, but few of my helpers will volunteer to enter
the grounds of First Baptist Church of Bolivar – for fear of reprisals
against their families or businesses.

Economic Reshuffle: FORWARD -- But, Two Steps Forward and ONE Step Back with Reconciliation Forum

For many, the Economic Downturn has caused a considerable reshuffle: forward -- but, TWO steps forward and ONE step back.

In my last fax (dated Friday, March 6, 2009 - see here), I indicated that I would be contacting you by mail regarding a number of issues, including my previous letter dated November 11, 2007.

In that correspondence, I indicated that it was (and remains) my intention to coordinate an electronic Reconciliation Forum – through which we may address these issues.

However, after several years of waiting and praying, I have received confirmation that I will be a “probable candidate” for inclusion in a long-term study on chemical injury, which is cooperatively funded and sponsored by several major universities – including my new university.


In order to qualify for the (fully-paid) medical evaluation, testing, and eventual treatment, I must be relocated by mid-May or early June. Therefore, several matters require my immediate attention.

I regret that I will be unable to complete the preparations for the Reconciliation Forum this week. (I do not multi-task as well as I once did: Unfortunately, the days when I could type one term paper while simultaneously dictating another paper to a friend are long gone.)

However, with the help of friends, the preparation for the Reconciliation Forum is nearing completion. I do not anticipate that the delay will extend over three or four more days, but I request your patience in re-scheduling this Reconciliation Forum for some time next week.

In any event, I will contact you again before Sunday, March 15.

In the interim, I commend to you the beautifully-written Official Kansas State Proclamation by Kansas Governor Kathleen Sibelius, the nominee for head of the Department of Health and Human Services, which reads:

WHEREAS, people of all ages throughout the world have developed illnesses from Toxic Injury; and

WHEREAS, Toxic Injury is often characterized by medical intolerance to very small amounts of air pollution, petrochemicals, and other toxins found in our everyday products and environment; and it can be caused by short-term or chronic exposure to one or more chemicals, frequently pesticides and solvents. There are diagnostic codes readily available for toxic effects of many chemicals found in our everyday environments and surroundings; and


WHEREAS, toxic injury may include multiple, often disabling illnesses and can be life-threatening. It is a chronic debilitating condition for which there is no known cure, causing serious detriments on society; and it is crucial for those suffering with toxic injury to have the support and understanding of their families, friends, and society; and

WHEREAS, the prevalence of these illnesses and the lack of knowledge and qualified doctors warrant further education in this field for the public in general, future as well as practicing doctors, dentist, rescue personnel as well as other healthcare, social service, rehabilitation, housing, architects, HVAC designers and installers, building maintenance and cleaning personnel, school and employer/supervisory persons at schools, workplaces and public facilities and pest control personal; and

WHEREAS, further education is needed in this field for the public in general because the power of knowledge can save precious lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, KATHLEEN SEBELIUS, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF KANSAS,

Do hereby proclaim May, 2008 as

TOXIC INJURY AWARENESS & EDUCATION MONTH

In Kansas and urge all citizens to join in this observance.

As you may know, former Missouri Governor Matt Blunt -- whose father, Congressman Roy Blunt, and family were members of your congregation -- followed the decade-long tradition among Missouri governors (and a growing majority of other governors) in a similar Proclamation on Illness for Toxic Injury and Chemically-Induced Injury.

Former Southwest Baptist University Trustee, Dr. Tom Elliff, Steps Down from International Mission Board as Senior Vice President

Dr. Tom Elliff -- a Trustee of Southwest Baptist University at the time of Marie's first and second acute pesticide poisonings and later president of the Southern Baptist Convention -- has announced today that he is stepping aside from his role at the International Mission Board.

Did Marie ever receive a response from Dr. Elliff concerning her several inquiries to him?

(Baptist Press)--Obedience to God's call does not depend on the state of the economy, Tom Elliff, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, said after announcing that he was stepping aside from his role at the International Mission Board.

After serving the past three years as senior vice president for spiritual nurture and church relations, Elliff said he and his wife Jeannie are answering the call to devote the balance of their lives to urging people toward living by faith and in the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

"It has been nothing short of a delicious experience," Elliff said of his time at the IMB. "I can tell you that every minute that we have had with the International Mission Board has been wonderful. Now we are just taking one more step toward the arms of God."

The Elliffs will continue teaching at IMB field personnel orientation sessions to support the work of taking the Gospel to the nations. ...

Through the years, Elliff and his family have walked through some challenges that most would consider quite serious. Earlier in their marriage, while serving as Southern Baptist missionaries in Zimbabwe, Jeannie and the children were in an automobile accident. One of their daughters suffered an injury that caused them to cut short their overseas service and return to the United States.

Other trials include the loss of their possessions twice -- once to a house fire and again to a tornado. Most recently Jeannie underwent surgery for breast cancer.

"As we look back on each of those events and what God taught us about walking with Him and living by faith, it was certainly worth the experience. We wouldn't take anything for what we learned," Elliff said. "He has taught us that He is trustworthy, absolutely trustworthy."

Now as they step out with excitement toward the next phase in life, Elliff said he is eager to share what he and Jeannie have learned about the importance of intimacy with Christ.

"At the heart of discipleship is intimacy with Christ," he said. "That's the arena in which you learn to take God at His word. We are to be living illustrations of the faithfulness of God to everyone who will take Him at His word."

Elliff is concerned with the overly pragmatic approach he sees in many Southern Baptist churches.

"We sometimes opt for the marketing approach at the expense of the mystical, the unfathomable ways of our sovereign God," he said. "If we're not careful, we'll become more interested in filling pews than filling the heart of the man in the pew. ...

Due to the changing circumstances, I was not able to send that correspondence. However, this past week’s developments have radically altered my scheduling.

At this point, I feel that an abbreviated process is in everyone’s best interest.

Whole-Hearted Truth: Sowing and Reaping the Harvest at Southwest Baptist University & Missouri Baptist Convention

A message sent by Marie, this morning:

In my last letter/post (see here), I wrote (excuse my rudeness in quoting myself):

This morning, I have begun to pray a new blessing for Southwest Baptist University and the Missouri Baptist Convention: that they and their families receive from God -- the God of Justice and Mercy -- the same Mercies that they have shown to me and my family.

If that prayer be a curse and not a blessing, then it is a curse of their own devising.

Some have expressed concern and -- even disbelief -- that I could have purposely written such an "un-Christian" and apparently vindictive statement, which is so against my peace-loving Ana-Baptist heritage and tradition.

I was uncomfortable with this statement, as well.

For the distress this may have caused, I am sincerely sorry, but I will let the statement stand as the Truth it is -- but only a partial truth.

As most know, since the second acute poisoning by organophosphate pesticides on the campus of Southwest Baptist University, I have had only limited use of my hands, due to the neurological damage from the neurotoxins.

To type on a keyboard, I use two fingers (one finger on each hand), rather than the ten-fingered method that I had used since high school.

Certainly, I am grateful to be able to type at all, but the difficulty with this method is that one has to stare at the keyboard while typing and it is easy to lose a word, a phrase, or a thought.

Such was the case when I wrote the letter in question. The original sentence as "written" in my thoughts was:

This morning, I have begun to pray a new blessing for Southwest Baptist University and the Missouri Baptist Convention: that THEY MAY UNDERSTAND that they and their families receive from God -- the God of Justice and Mercy -- the same Mercies that they have shown to me and my family.

When I looked up to check my sentence, I realize my error and moved my mouse to begin the correction ... but then I realized that my prayer was already being answered, so I left it as written.

If I alluded to the fact that the harm visited upon me and my family resulting from the negligence and unethical conduct of these officials would be visited upon their families, that they would reap as they had sown, would it startle them into reality and suddenly open their eyes to the Truth?

It was worth a try.

In actuality, though, my prayer continues to be that Southwest Baptist University and the Missouri Baptist Convention officials BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND that by sowing and continuing to sow seeds of suffering into my life, they themselves will reap a harvest of destruction in their own lives.

For the Scripture is clear: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. (Galatians 6:6-8).

It IS the will of God that we reap what we have sown: this is truth ... but only partial Truth.

Does any believer honestly contend that God is so tiny and wicked as to inflict suffering on innocent children or family members -- even if I had "prayed it" upon them (which I did not)?

No, without question, God is not willing that any should perish ... and His judgments are just.

Nonetheless, in seeking the lower road, Southwest Baptist University and Missouri Baptist Convention officials have left us all -- including their own families -- open to assault, open to the realities of this Law of Reaping and the Sown Harvest.

Unfortunately, the present Baptist tradition teaches an extraordinary, self-oriented worldview -- all and everything is for, about, and because of Baptists, particularly the individual and his family.

This philosophy is not based in reality. Simply put: Life does not exist -- and is not lived -- within a vacuum.

There is a Higher Truth at work here: all of us exist as members of a Spiritual Ecology, a system of interlocking and interweaving wonders.

Your actions have consequences in my life; my actions generate consequences for you. Our lives connect, meld, and intermingle with dozens and thousands of others here, throughout the world, and throughout time -- for good or evil.

It is plain to see, perhaps because I know so many more of the details, that this situation is more far-reaching than commonly known, understood, or advertised.

Whereas SBU and MBC officials would like to end this by "ending" me, I understand that this immature reaction will bring harm and disruption to many lives and families -- not merely to me or those close to me.

I hoped that over the last few days, as some reflected on these posted items, those in positions of authority would gained wisdom.

This situation must be Redeemed -- not merely glossed over and forgotten. This is why I have sought Restorative Justice.

We may beseech God to help us to cut down the cruel thorns and dig up the tangle of overgrown weeds, which have already been sown, fertilized, and nurtured by such leaders.

Are we not granted the right and obligation to tend our own gardens: to restore the garden to fruitfulness, transforming our lives into the abundant havens of hope that He intended for us to be as Manifestations of Himself -- the Rose of Sharon, the Healing Balm of Gilead, and the Bread of Life?

It is our duty to tend this garden! Isn't this our purpose?

Isn't this is why we, as people, a Christian people, are here: to reclaim and restore the fallen, to uphold the innocent, to strive for Wisdom and Justice, and to love the Lord our God with our whole hearts ... and our neighbors as ourselves?

None of us are yet perfected, but we must strive toward that perfection: we must grow. This is not accomplished by standing in a dank forest of thorns trees .. and eating the poisonous fruit.

We must hack down strangling stronghold of thorn thickets and open the Darkness to the Light.

For many years, I viewed these officials and clergy with a child's eyes, as if they were in some ways like parents -- beyond criticism or righteous judgment.

Now, they sometimes appear to be children themselves -- unwilling to climb up into the highchair and taste of the Meat, choosing instead to sit in dirty diapers on the filthy floor, while hurling grubby mashed potatoes and peas at their siblings.

Even among those who are willing to mature, their behavior is inconsistent: vacillating between vicious and intransigent bullying, as they snarl like frightened, rabid animals, and simpering and mystifying instability, as they swoon, like moon-eyed school girls, over their latest organizational savior and man-crush.

It's become difficult to take them seriously, or to see them as speaking for The Lord God.

Yet, God has spoken even through a donkey. And have I not been, at times, as stubborn and frightened as they?

Nonetheless, this is why I feel it is best to simplify and shorten this Restorative Justice Process.

While others options remain available, I have written four pastors (Billy Russell, Ray Leininger, Rodney Reeves, and Gary Ankrom) to request that they act as mediators in completing this Restorative Justice Process in a private forum by this Easter.

I am proceeding with other options, however, in the event that I cannot secure a tenable commitment from these pastors by Sunday, March 14.

Roy Blunt (Former CEO/Trustee of Southwest Baptist University, Current Congressman) and His New Healthcare Vision for American Families

Congressman Roy Blunt (R-7th District of Missouri) has entered the 2010 Senate race to replace Senator "Kit" Bond, who announced his retirement last month. (Democrat Robin Carnahan has announced she will run for the vacancy, as well.)

The letter to the Higher Learning Commission (referenced below) will be posted this weekend, along with a letter to Rev. Billy Russell, the pastor of First Baptist Church of Bolivar.

Some have requested information on the death of Marie's widowed sister, Teresa (also referenced below), which may be located in the archives.

In the Spring of 2007, after several years of anticipation and planning, Marie and her sister, Teresa, and family were making plans to move together to Montana.

Teresa had already visited their new hometown, put money down on a rental apartment in Montana, secured a good job as a nursing assistant at a local hospital, and found a church ... when, in March 2007, she was diagnosed with kidney cancer.

Teresa underwent surgery within the week, but had a heart attack and "died" while on the operating table, though she was revived.

Based on the severity of Marie's disability, the court denied her sister, Marie, guardianship over her sister's care.

As a result, Teresa was placed under Medicare, denied rehabilitation, and slowly starved to death.

Likewise, due to her disability, Marie was denied guardianship over the four children, Marie's niece and three nephews.

[In 1996, a fifth child, the oldest son, Chon Chon (Ascension, Jr.), was killed by a drunk driver -- along with Teresa's husband, the father of all of the siblings. The two remaining older boys survived the crash -- at least physically.]

As far as Marie knows, the two youngest children are in foster care and she has some limited communication with her niece. She has not heard from the two older nephews, who were left homeless after the foreclosure of the family's farm.

A POINT IN PAIN

When asked why she had apparently changed course (see "Re-formation" here and "Confirmation" here), Marie replied, this morning:

Again, I was torn last night by nightmares of my sister's suffering and death ... and my own hot tears upon waking only worsened the torment that I could not be there to defend her from the abuse, to wipe away her tears and to hold her as she died.

And, I can not even think of her remaining four children -- who have been orphaned, torn apart and thrown into the foster care system, or onto the streets -- without being consumed with grief and despair.

My own pain was one thing, but there comes a point in pain when the truth about Southwest Baptist University needs to be told, the truth about how my family has been savaged and destroyed by my experience at Southwest Baptist University.

Others families need to be warned.

Reasonable people, I believe, will quickly reach a simple conclusion: Given their record of sociopathic organizational incompetence, is Southwest Baptist University even qualified to provide academic services?

This is not a personal vendetta; it is irrelevant to me how the change of leadership is brought about -- whether by a change in philosophies, procedures, and policies, or by a change in personnel.

It is not enough to wave a wand over the ego-ridden incompetence and arrogance of decades of abuses and claim it is now "under the blood."

Such self-serving nonsense is madness and blasphemy, which diminishes Christianity and Baptist principles to no more than the egoistic ravings of a wanton blood cult.

It can't go on.

This needs to be addressed in a mature and orderly fashion.

Southwest Baptist University has seen my medical records; they know that my condition is permanent and most likely terminal.

Beyond that, they know that it is simply a matter of time -- without the extraordinary and specific medical intervention, such as that care which is available at my new university, which is currently researching and treating organophosphate and solvent poisoning.

Further, they know that the medical degeneration process can be (and certainly been) hastened by the petty tyrannies and the privation, which have been unscrupulously and viciously imposed for years.

It is only the miraculous Grace of God and the harrowing sacrifice of friends and family that, as a result of those privations, I have not already perished.

And, yes, be assured that when I do finally succumb to their abuses, they will slander me all the more heartily and gleefully when I can't defend myself.

If I must die for their sins, at least I want the comfort that others will not suffer from their madness.

This morning, I have begun to pray a new blessing for Southwest Baptist University and the Missouri Baptist Convention: that they and their families receive from God -- the God of Justice and Mercy -- the same Mercies that they have shown to me and my family.

If that prayer be a curse and not a blessing, then it is a curse of their own devising.

What Southwest Baptist University and their allies have done, what they have BECOME, is not "alright"; it was not -- and IS not -- an "accident."

Some reasonable and moral authority needs to address this: that is why I am asking for the intervention of the Higher Learning Commission, which is SBU's accreditation authority.

The letter to the Higher Learning Commission will be posted shortly, along with a letter to Rev. Billy Russell.

Confirmation Requested: Accreditation Complaint against Southwest Baptist University and the Missouri Baptist Convention

As a part of the accreditation complaint (see previous post) against Southwest Baptist University and the Missouri Baptist Convention though the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, Marie has requested that, in order to facilitate communication, she be sent the following:

• written confirmation that each member of the governing `board which claims to own and operate Southwest Baptist University, that is, the current Executive Board of the Missouri Baptist Convention has received a copy of this complaint (and any subsequent correspondence resulting from the complaint) -- particularly Jody Shelenhamer, a layman a First Baptist Church heavily instrumental in the "Peacermakers Committee" of the MBC Executive Board (see latest story here);
• written confirmation that each member of the Southwest Baptist University Trustee Board -- particularly Rebecca Randles, who is an attorney for victims abused by clergy, and Rev. Billy Russell, who is the pastor of First Baptist Church of Bolivar -- has received a copy of this complaint (and any subsequent correspondence resulting from the complaint);
  
• written confirmation that each member of the Southwest Baptist University Faculty Senate has received a copy of this complaint (and any subsequent correspondence resulting from the complaint);
• written confirmation that each officer of the Southwest Baptist University Student Government Association has received a copy of this complaint (and any subsequent correspondence resulting from the complaint);
• written confirmation from each member of the Southwest Baptist University Administration has received a copy of this complaint (and any further correspondence resulting from the complaint).

Because the accreditation complaint will be public, the entire correspondence will be posted.

REAL COMMUNITY: Contact with Southwest Baptist University Trustees Suspended; Contact with First Baptist Church of Bolivar to Continue This Week

We are sorry.

We believe that it would have been in the community's (and the Missouri Baptist Convention's) best interest to involve Southwest Baptist University trustees and officials in the Restorative Justice Process, but, at this point, no viable communication can yet be established.

However, Marie will still be in contact with the First Baptist Church of Bolivar this week and will offer a means of reconciliation to those from the University who choose to participate.

We will be encouraging members of the Baptist General Convention of Missouri (info here) and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Missouri (info here) to participate in this Restorative Justice Process, also.

The Trinity Contract Blogsite will be posted and linked from this site shortly -- though it's official "opening" will be on Valentine's Day, February 14.

Atheistic Christians: It Appears an Investigation of the Southwest Baptist University Trustees and Governance is Inevitable

The initial informal feedback from the Southwest Baptist University Trustee meeting has not been positive.

Was this the usual immature bickering, defensiveness, and bullying of several of the Southwest Baptist University Trustees? Or, was this the comprehensive "spirit" of the entire Board?

Time will tell.

However, given this belligerent response, it seems a full and formal investigation of the Southwest Baptist University Trustee Board (as well as the individual Trustees, governance, legal staff, administration, faculty and staff) may be inevitable.

This was not wholly unexpected. From our experience, it appears few of the Southwest Baptist University Trustees, governance, or staff of Southwest Baptist University are actual Christians -- particularly as applies to their lifestyles, relationships with others, and understanding of civil law.

They are, in effect, *Atheistic Christians.

*Atheistic: rejecting any belief in God

Reconciliation may not be possible, though other options are certainly viable.

Regardless, The Trinity Contract will be posted this Valentine's Day, February 14, so that anyone -- whether involved in the original unethical and criminal conduct or not -- may participate.

There is still one more day of the Trustee meeting, but -- at this time -- it seems that reconciliation may well have failed.

Marie's formal letter will be presented tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.

Question 1. What about the participation of the First Baptist Church of Bolivar?
They will all be included in the "festivities" next week during the Southwest Baptist University Board of Trustees' Meeting on February 9 and 10.

Question 2. What about Billy Russell (their current pastor and a newly-appointed Trustees of Southwest Baptist University)?
He will be asked to deliver the "Invitations" to his colleagues on the Southwest Baptist University Board of Trustees and within the First Baptist Church of Bolivar.

Question 3. And Ray Leininger (their former pastor and former SBU Trusteee, Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Board member, and etc., etc.)?
He has his part to play, if he chooses to do so.

Only if those individuals refuse any other option. Such an outcome would be considered a failure of the Process of Restorative Justice.

It doesn't; it only appears so because Southwest Baptist University, the Missouri Baptist Convention officials and others involved so many individuals and organizations.

This Process attempts to consolidate these various disputes into one "Opportunity for Restorative Ministry."

Question 6. With so much being discussed publicly, how can this possibly remain private?
Because of the number of individuals involved, certain initial aspects of the process must be made public, but the actual workings of the Process will remain private.

Question 7. How long will this take?
Marie has requested that the Process be completed by Easter; she wishes to relocate to her new university and home this spring, as soon as the weather moderates.

Question 8. How is Marie doing?
This winter has been difficult, but she has had far worse.

Food donations from organic food producers have been generous! (Thanks, guys!) Marie has been able to maintain her muscle mass and minimize seizures, respiratory inflammation, adverse immune responses and other complications -- which we hope will increase her chances of survival during her relocation.

Marie is looking forward to moving and to starting a new life, elsewhere.

Cold Hope: WWII Vet Frozen to Death Leaves Estate to Hospital

Things aren't always what they seem.

In the blog entitled, Too Close for Comfort, which was posted last week (here), we described the case of the 93-year-old, Bay City, Michigan veteran, who froze to death in his own home as a result of the disconnection (or "limiting") of his electrical service.

[As we noted, elements of the story were all too reminiscent of the treatment Marie had received in previous years at the hands of Southwest Baptist University, Missouri Baptist Convention, Empire District Electric Company and Bolivar City officials (see the end of the post here). ]

CNN is reporting that Marvin Schur's story has now taken another odd twist:

(CNN) -- A 93-year-old World War II medic who froze to death last month in his Bay City, Michigan, home left his entire estate to a local hospital, an estate attorney told CNN Wednesday.

The temperature in Marvin Schur's home was 32 degrees when his body was found, a medical examiner said.

The attorney would not disclose the exact amount left behind by Martin Schur. But his nephew said his uncle indicated to family members two years ago that he had saved up more than a half-million dollars over the years. Schur and his wife, Marian, who died more than a year ago, did not have any children.

"I just know at one time he said he had over $600,000 in savings," said William Walworth. "That's what he told me and my brother, and he was proud that he was able to save and build his estate up to that."

Cathy Reder, an attorney negotiating on behalf of Bay Regional Medical Center and the Schur family, said she was filing paperwork in probate court Wednesday for the court to determine the validity of the will. A hearing has been set for March 17.

Reder would not specify the amount left to the hospital, other than to say it's more than $1.

"The will leaves everything to Bay Medical Center," she said.

The hospital had no immediate comment.

Walworth said his uncle was a frugal man who hadn't eaten at a restaurant for over 30 years. "He was very tight, and he was very frugal. But he did manage to save a lot of money."

He said it's possible his uncle's estate could be less than $600,000, but he believes it's still "sizable."

"Knowing my uncle, that's him," Walworth said. "He loved his community. He loved Bay City, Michigan."

He added, "Hopefully his death is not in vain and we can learn from this, and he's still able to save lives. ... He was a very unique, special person in my life. I'm proud of what he was able to do in his life."

He said he hopes his uncle's message will spur others to "look out for their neighbor."

Servant-Leaders?: Unethical/Criminal Conduct to be Addressed at Southwest Baptist University Trustees Meeting on Feb 9 -10; MBC's Tolliver Invited

When faced with moral or ethical failure, what example should "servant-leaders" provide for Southwest Baptist University students, Missouri Baptists, the Church, and the community?

Marie is asking -- in writing -- that the unethical and/or criminal conduct of Southwest Baptist University's leadership's be addressed directly at Southwest Baptist University Trustees Meeting on February 9 -10.

The "new" Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Director Dr. David Tolliver is also heartily invited to attend ... and answer these questions in person.
